Guide
How to get repeat customers for an online store in Pakistan
How to make the first order bring a second one: packing, the card and delivery on the day you said. Then a buyer list with permission, getting your number saved so broadcasts arrive, messages timed to when the product runs out, new stock for past buyers first, and an offer that does not eat your margin.
A repeat buyer already knows your stitching, your packing and that the rider shows up. They do not need an ad to find you, and they do not need convincing to pay cash at the door. The work is in being remembered, and in giving them a reason to order again at the moment they need one. Everything below is something a small seller can do from a phone.
The first order decides the second
On cash on delivery the buyer meets your business twice: when the rider hands over the parcel, and when they open it at home. Get both right before you think about the second order.
- Pack it like you expect to be judged. A clean flyer or box, the product folded or wrapped so it arrives as it looked in the photo. Our guide to packaging for an online business covers what to use for clothes, cosmetics and anything that breaks.
- A thank-you card with your number on it. A handwritten first name, your brand, your WhatsApp number and a line saying where to come if anything is wrong. A QR code on the card can open your store or a chat.
- Deliver when you said. Promise the time you can actually keep, not the courier’s best case. Send the tracking number the day you book, so the buyer is not chasing you. A parcel that came on the day you said is the quiet reason people order again.
- A message on the day it arrives. Thank them and ask them to tell you if anything is wrong. Our order confirmation messages include one in English and Roman Urdu.
Keep a buyer list, with permission
You cannot bring back a buyer you cannot find. Keep one sheet, in Google Sheets or Excel, with a row per order:
| Name | City | Bought | Date | OK to message | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ayesha | 03xx xxxxxxx | Multan | Lawn 3-piece, size M | Sep 12 | Yes, new stock |
| Bilal | 03xx xxxxxxx | Lahore | Hair oil 200 ml | Sep 20 | Yes, refills only |
Add a notes column for what you would want to know next time: size, a colour they asked about, a complaint you fixed. “Bought” and “date” are what make the rest of this guide work, because they tell you who to message and when.
The last column matters most. WhatsApp’s Business Messaging Policy, which covers the WhatsApp Business app, says you may only contact people who gave you their number and gave you “opt-in permission” to receive further messages, and that you must honour any request to stop. Ordering once is not the same as agreeing to offers. Ask, at order confirmation:
Write down the answer, and what they agreed to. When someone says stop, mark it the same day and take them off every list.
If you sell on your own store, each order already holds the buyer’s name, phone and address. Copy them into the sheet when you confirm the order, so the list grows without a separate chore. To get the sheet into your phone, the CSV to VCF converter turns it into contacts your phone can import.
Get your number saved, or broadcasts go nowhere
The WhatsApp broadcast list is the free way to message past buyers one by one at once. WhatsApp’s help page on broadcast lists sets the rules, as of October 2026:
- Every contact on the list must have saved your number in their address book. Anyone who has not gets nothing.
- Each list holds up to 256 contacts.
- Broadcast lists are not supported on WhatsApp Web or the desktop apps.
So the real work is getting saved. Ask in the confirmation message above, print your number on the card and the packing slip, and use the same number on your store and Instagram. Make lists by what people bought, not one big list, so a hair oil buyer does not get your lawn launch. Our guide to WhatsApp marketing covers lists, Status, Channels, the monthly broadcast limit some countries are getting, and how to avoid a ban.
Message when the product runs out
Some products end. A face wash, hair oil, honey, masala, tea, baby wipes, a candle. For these, the best time to message is just before the buyer runs out, when they would otherwise buy the same thing from the shop downstairs.
Work out how long one unit lasts at normal use. If a 200 ml bottle of oil is used at 5 ml a day, it lasts 40 days. Use your own product’s numbers, then ask a few buyers when they ran out and adjust. Message a few days before that point:
“Same address as last time” does a lot of work. The buyer only has to say yes. Confirm the order in the chat the way you confirm any COD order, with the amount and the address read back.
Clothes and shoes do not run out. For these, the reorder moment is the next season or the next occasion, which the calendar section below covers.
New arrivals for past buyers first
Before a new piece goes on Instagram, send it to past buyers who bought something close to it. A day early is enough. It costs you nothing, it tells them they are not just one of your followers, and it can sell the sizes that run out first.
Send to the matching list, not everyone: lawn buyers for new lawn, kids’ clothes buyers for the next kids’ drop. Mention what they bought, so the message reads as written for them. If you hold a piece, hold it until the day you said and then release it.
A returning buyer offer that keeps your margin
A repeat order through your own WhatsApp list costs you no ad money. That saving is where a thank-you can come from, without cutting into the margin you already make. Work out your numbers first with our guide on how to calculate profit margin, then pick an offer that fits inside the ad cost you are no longer paying.
- A small gift in the parcel. A sample, a scrunchie, a matching pouch. The cost is fixed and small, and it does not change your price.
- A piece held for them. First pick of new stock, as above. It costs nothing.
- A bundle. Two refills at a price that is still above your floor. The courier charge is paid once for both.
- Money off, only if the numbers work. If you spend Rs 300 in ads per new order, a Rs 150 thank-you to a returning buyer still leaves you Rs 150 better off than a new order. If you spend nothing on ads, a discount comes straight out of profit.
The discount calculator shows your profit before and after any money off. Whatever you offer, give it an end date, and say it the same way to everyone on the list.
Fix the first problem well
Sooner or later a buyer gets the wrong size, a colour that looks different in daylight or a parcel that took a week. That buyer is not lost yet. What you do in the next hour decides whether they order again: reply fast, ask for photos, do not argue about who is right, and tell them exactly what happens next and when.
Our guide to handling customer complaints has the reply for each case, and when to exchange, refund or say no. Note the complaint and how it ended in your buyer sheet. The next time that buyer orders, check the size or the colour with them before you pack.
Reviews from returning buyers
A buyer who ordered twice has the most useful thing to say: that it was good both times. Ask them for a review a few days after the second delivery, with a photo or a voice note if they will. Our guide on how to get reviews from customers has the message, how to ask permission and how to hide their number before you post.
Do not swap a discount for a review. Thank them for the review, and thank them for coming back, but keep the two separate.
A year of reasons to message
Clothes, shoes, gifts and home items sell around dates. Each one is a reason to message the buyers who bought for the last one:
- Ramadan and Eid. The biggest one for clothes and gifts. Tell past buyers your last order date for Eid delivery before anyone else. Our Eid sale guide works back from the date, week by week.
- Wedding season for formal wear, jewellery and gift boxes.
- Summer and winter launches for lawn, khaddar, shawls and bedsheets.
- School terms for kids’ clothes, shoes and stationery.
- 11.11 and White Friday. If you run a sale at all, past buyers hear first.
Put the dates in your phone’s calendar with the list you will message for each. When the date comes, the message is already planned.
What drives buyers away
- Too many messages. Send what you said you would, when you have something that fits them. A buyer who mutes you is gone without telling you.
- Messages that ignore what they bought. Men’s kurtas to a buyer who bought a baby blanket reads as spam.
- Ignoring a stop. WhatsApp’s policy requires you to honour it, and people can block or report you.
- A worse second order. Different fabric, slower dispatch, rougher packing. Repeat buyers notice, because they have the first one to compare.
- Changing your number. The number they saved is the whole channel. Keep one number for the business.
Questions sellers ask
How do I get repeat customers for my online store?
Make the first order right: careful packing, a thank-you card and delivery when you said. Then keep a list of buyers who agreed to hear from you, ask them to save your number, and message them when the product they bought runs out or when new stock arrives, before you post it anywhere else.
How do I retain customers in a small business?
Remember them. Keep a sheet with each buyer’s name, number, city, what they bought and when. Use it to message at the right time with something that fits what they bought, fix their first problem quickly, and never send more than they agreed to.
How do I make customers come back without giving discounts?
Give past buyers something new buyers do not get: the first look at new stock, a piece held for them for a day, a small gift in the parcel, or a reminder when their product is about to run out. None of these lower your price.
Why do my WhatsApp broadcasts not reach old customers?
WhatsApp’s help page says everyone on a broadcast list must have saved your number in their contacts. Buyers who never saved it get nothing, and the app does not warn you. Ask them to save it at order confirmation and print it on the card in the parcel.
How often should I message past customers?
As often as you told them you would when they agreed, and only when you have something that fits what they bought. A message tied to their order, such as a refill or a matching new piece, is welcome. A daily offer to everyone invites mutes and blocks, and WhatsApp says its systems may limit how many messages a business can send based on that feedback.
