Instagram puts your newest post at the top left. Posting the last tile first means the picture lines up when you finish. Tap a tile to save just that one.
Files are named post-1-of-9, post-2-of-9 and so on for a 3 × 3 grid, in the order you post them. Post-1 is the last tile, at the bottom right, and the last file is tile 1, at the top left.

What is the Instagram grid size in 2026?
Profile thumbnails are 3:4 portrait, which is 1080 × 1440 pixels. Feed posts can still be 4:5 (1080 × 1350), and Instagram now accepts 3:4 uploads too. A 1080 × 1440 tile shows the same in the feed and on the grid. This tool uses that size, and offers square tiles as an option.
How do I split an image into a 3×3 grid for Instagram?
Choose 3 × 3, add your photo, drag and zoom it so the important part sits in the middle, and download the zip. Post the tiles in the order shown by the numbers, starting with the highest number. That way the first tile ends up top left when you finish.
In what order do I post the grid tiles?
Last tile first. For nine tiles, post 9 first, then 8, down to 1. Instagram puts the newest post at the top left, so the picture lines up when the last post goes up. The files are named so that they sort in posting order.
What is the best size for a 3×1 grid?
A 3 × 1 split makes three tiles of 1080 × 1440, so the whole picture is 3240 × 1440 pixels. Use a wide photo for it, otherwise it gets cropped to fit. The preview shows exactly what will be cut.
Will old posts break the grid?
Posts already on your profile stay, and new posts push them down. Put all the tiles up one after another and post nothing else in between, and the picture lines up at the top of your profile.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The photo is cut into tiles on your phone or computer and nothing is sent to us.
