What size is a YouTube thumbnail?
YouTube recommends 1280 × 720 pixels for the video, which is 16:9, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. This tool saves at 1280 × 720 pixels, so it fits the frame without cropping.
What is the file size limit for a YouTube thumbnail?
YouTube’s Help page says thumbnails uploaded from a phone can be up to 2 MB, and up to 50 MB from a computer. The JPG here is saved at the highest quality that stays under 2 MB, so it works from either.
Should I save a JPG or a PNG?
YouTube accepts both. A JPG is much smaller, which suits a thumbnail made from photos. A PNG keeps flat colours and text crisp but can pass 2 MB when it has photos, so upload the JPG from a phone.
What is the grey box in the corner of the preview?
YouTube puts the video length badge at the bottom right of every thumbnail. The preview marks that corner so you keep words out of it. The marker is not in the download, and you can switch it off.
